Sound & Fury – Don’t fuck up the band.

28 03 2015

Sound and Fury h and j “I’m fucking up my favourite band…by playing in it” – Davey Lane, You Am I.

That is one of my favourite quotes from the You Am I documentary “The Cream and Crock” where Davey expressed his concern of not quite cutting the mustard when he first joined his favourite band. This kinda reflected how I felt about this summer. I have been a fan and friend of LA’s Sound And Fury for many years from touring a lot of the same Canadian Fringe Festivals (and more recently, the Australian Fringes) with them and so when they asked me to replace third troupe member Ryan for the Australian leg of their 2015 tour, I was firstly honoured, then excited and then absolutely terrified. S&F have been around as a troupe for over 17 years and have a strong following in Australia so I had big shoes to fill, two shows worth of lines to learn and a lot of people to try and impress. It was a really daunting task, but I love a challenge. I cut my teeth at Fringe World in Perth with a whirlwind week of performances of Hitchcocked and Hamlet & Juliet (insanely sandwiched between performances of my own show Trampoline) but it was really the Adelaide Fringe season of Hamlet & Juliet that I really started to find my feet. I started to feel more at home in the troupe, more comfortable improvising within the shows and trying out new jokes (mostly involving attempting to annoy Richard onstage) and putting my own goofy spin in the characters I played.

It was a whole new experience as an actor or improviser. We all have a similar sense of humour and while we’d all done a lot of improv but a S&F show is a whole different beast and it was a rewarding experience for me as a performer to challenge myself with something like this. It was important to me (and to the others) that I wasn’t just doing an impression of Ryan and the guys really made me like I had to the freedom to play around and make my spot in the troupe my own and I am forever grateful for that. The feedback from new, and perhaps more importantly, long time fans of S&F was overwhelmingly positive and it was lovely to be accepted as more than just “the new guy” or “not Ryan”.

Patrick and Richard, thank you both so much for all your hard work and for helping me feel so much part of the team. Ryan thanks for needing time to plan your wedding, you were very much missed this tour, but I’m sure glad I go to be the first ever Aussie Sound & Fury-er. I do hope we can all do it all again someday.

Some reviews, with a few mentions of me, not fucking up.

“We were also introduced to the filling-in Shane, found in Perth and more than capable of getting formidably silly in the best Sound & Fury tradition.” Rip it up ★★★★

“Forget the nunnery; get thee to Bally tent in Gluttony, where Hamlet and Juliet plays nightly “InDaily

“Joining Maritzer and long-standing member Patrick Hercamp for their Australian tour is Perth local, Shane Adamczak. He fits right in, despite the clash of accents” Glam Adelaide ★★★★

FRINGE WORLD 2015

19 01 2015

Hey gang. It’s been a while between drinks, but as usual I’ve been busy working behind-the-scenes wearing my Producer’s Hat and I’m so excited to finally launch into 2015 with a bunch of exciting shows at the Fringe World Festival and a new position as Artistic Director of Weeping Spoon Productions.

Firstly, my play TRAMPOLINE returns to Perth for the first time at the Fringe Festival and with two incredible new cast members joining me onstage from Jan 23rd. It’s been a blast having two of my favourite performers, the ridiculously multi-talented Ella Hetherington and Brendan Ewing, help create a really fun, fresh take on the show. Dare I say, the best yet. Tickets on sale here.

saf2I’m also joining my good friends from the States, Sound And Fury for their 2015 Australian Tour, performing in Hamlet and Juliet and Hitchcocked. Be sure to check out their website for tour dates and times at Fringe World and The Adelaide Fringe.

Beyond that I’ll also be in Adelaide with the return of the Blue Room Award winning This Is Not A Love song at Tuxedo Cat. Tegan Mulvany and Greg Fleet are back and joining us this time around is muso Mick Moriarty of GUD and The Gadfly’s fame.

I should also mention I’m (ever so briefly) in the feature film Paper Planes, currently playing across Australia. You should go see it.

IN THE FUTURE…

2015 is looking like it’s going to be a big year for Weeping Spoon. In the second part of this year there’s some big news in regards to Canada and some brand NEW works (plural!) from my brain this year which I am really excited plus some really awesome collaborations about but more on that once I get through Fringe.

THE END IS NIGH

14 03 2014

VICIOUS received a High Commendation at the Weekly Adelaide Fringe awards for Best Theatre, which was pretty awesome.

We also got another mention in The Sunday Mail’s Fringe round up The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

“The Good this year involved some great and challenging theatre that really raised the bar for people who like more than just comedy out of the Fringe.Leading the way was Weeping Spoon’s take on lies and fall of the Sex Pistols called Vicious Circles at the Wine Underground. It was in-your-face, confronting, brilliant drama that took you back to a  time when Anarchy ruled the UK.” -Matt Byrne, The Sunday Mail

30 11 2013

Wow, what a crazy month it’s been. Running straight for the success of Trampoline to the Aussie debut of Captain Spaceship! I am super stoked with how well it went, the cast pick up the format and took to whole new awesome levels and our audiences we large and loyal, what more could a crew of intergalactic super-nerds ask for?

I’ve been busy auditioning for a bunch of cool stuff in Australia and filming a few small parts in a mini-series and a feature film which has been really sweet. November has been a big month for shaping where I will be and what I will be doing for most of 2014…more news on that as soon AS I KNOW WHAT THE HELL I’M DOING WITH MY LIFE…*cough*

Big Vicious Circles news, Tickets for THE ADELAIDE FRINGE SEASON are on sale NOW! News for the Perth season will be released very shortly and there’s also a brand new Weeping Spoon Website coming soon!
